CLASS B RESTRICTED ROADS WITH MAP

TUSCOLA COUNTY SIZE AND WEIGHT ENFORCEMENT

Most roads in Tuscola County are under Normal Loading Weights as follows: Sec. 722.

(1) The maximum axle load shall not exceed the number of pounds designated in the following provisions that prescribe the distance between axles:

(a) If the axle spacing is 9 feet or more between axles, the maximum axle load shall not exceed 18,000 pounds for vehicles equipped with high pressure pneumatic or balloon tires.

(b) If the axle spacing is less than 9 feet between 2 axles but more than 3-1/2 feet, the maximum axle load shall not exceed 13,000 pounds for high pressure pneumatic or balloon tires.

(c) If the axles are spaced less than 3-1/2 feet apart, the maximum axle load shall not exceed 9,000 pounds per axle.

(d) Subdivisions (a), (b), and (c) shall be known as the normal loading maximum

The above Normal Loading also known as Class "B" is enforced on Blacktop and Gravel county roadways. This is a State Law found in the Michigan Motor Vehicle Code Act 300 of 1949 section 257.722 and is not a local ordinance.

These Normal Loading roadways (Class "B") are Weight Reduced in the Spring by the following: The Maximum Axle Loading on Blacktop or Gravel Roadways Shall be Reduced from the Normal Loading Weight of 700 pounds per inch of tire width to a Maximum of 450 pounds per inch of tire width. For example: a 13,000 pound axle during the Frost Law would be reduced to a maximum of 8,450 pounds and a 18,000 pound 9 foot or more spread axle would be reduced to 11,700 pounds. Over Load Permits are NOT VALID when the Frost Laws are in effect. (Exceptions May be permitted with Board Approval)

Tuscola County does have some sections of roadways that allow both Designated and Special Designated Loading. These roadway sections are allowed maximum legal loading even during the Spring Frost Law Period however, unless Road Commission Board Approved for Emergency Purposes Only, No Loading over these maximums is allowed ( No Overweight Permits without Board Approval). (Some drivers call these loadings Class "A")

A list of the current sections of County roadways that allow Designated and Special Designated Loading are as follows:

Tuscola County also has some Weight Restricted Bridges that are posted at the Bridge and at the intersection before the Bridge and the Signs are read as follows:

For Example: If three pictures of trucks are on the sign the first means a "Straight" Truck with any number of axles on it. The second picture means a Tractor Trailer or a Truck Trailer with any number of axles on it and the third picture means a Truck Tractor with Two Trailers with any number of axles on it. Note that the posted Weights are always in Tons.

Note that a few Bridges are posted with a sign that just has one certain tonnage on it and is intended for any size truck or truck trailer combinations so that a Straight truck is allowed the same weight on the Bridge as a double bottom semi.

A list of Posted Bridges in the County is as Follows:
